Target selection is one of the most underrated skills in golf. Many players aim at the flag by default, even when the smart target is ten yards away from it. Choosing better targets can reduce big numbers without requiring a perfect swing.
Start with your normal shot pattern
A smart target accounts for dispersion. If a player normally misses both left and right, aiming directly at a dangerous edge is rarely a good plan. The target should give the normal shot pattern room to survive.
Know the best miss
Before choosing a target, ask where the ball can miss without creating a disaster. The best miss might be the middle of the green, the wide side of the fairway, or a layup zone that leaves a comfortable next shot.
Respect lie and distance
A target that makes sense from the fairway may be too aggressive from rough, sand, slope, or an awkward stance. Good target selection changes with the lie and the player realistic carry distance.
Practice target decisions repeatedly
Players improve faster when they practice target selection as a skill. That means repeating scenarios, reviewing outcomes, and learning which decisions are repeatable.
Jetta helps players practice target decisions through Golf Academy, real-round recording in GPS On-Course Mode, and review through Learning Reports.
